Phonics

Phonics

Phonics is taught daily across Reception and Key Stage 1 using the 'Little Wandle' scheme of work accredited by the DFE. We use phonetically decodable books as part of phonics teaching and learning. Once children can securely decode and blend phonemes in words to read they progress to guided reading using books closely matched to their developing skills. Where a child might need additional support, we have interventions which aim to ensure each child maximises their progress and 'catches up'. We aim to ensure every child thrives, enjoys their reading and succeeds.

Children are regularly assessed so that they are working within the appropriate phonics phase.  When a child is in Year 1 (during the month of June) the undertake the ‘Phonics Screening’ assessment to determine if they are working within at least phase 5.  If they do not meet this requirement, they will retake the assessment the following year.

We aim to provide an English education at Christ Church Upper Armley where all children are fully literate and are able to read, write, speak and listen well.
